Expansion of the MEGAOHM™ range: the insulated bearing that protects electric motors

The use of variable frequency drives on electric motors is the cause of numerous failures, linked to the flow of high-frequency currents inside the bearing. These eddy currents can cause premature damage to components and compromise the reliability of the equipment.

To address this issue, NTN has developed the MEGAOHMTM range, a range of insulated bearings designed to effectively protect electric motors against the effects of eddy currents.

A comprehensive and high-performance range

NTN is expanding its MEGAOHMTM range to meet an even wider range of requirements. This expansion involves the addition of bearings fitted with a sheet-metal cage, suitable for small motors. These complement the brass-cage version, which is intended for larger motors.

The MEGAOHMTM bearing offers, above all:
- High-performance electrical insulation thanks to a ceramic coating
- Electrical resistance of up to 3000 VDC
- Two ranges available depending on the application: sheet metal cage and brass cage
- Compatibility with standard bearings, facilitating integration

The availability of the MEGAOHMTM range

The availability of the range across all standard part numbers is a real advantage for coil winders and electric motor maintenance professionals, who often need to get hold of the right part quickly to ensure repairs are carried out as promptly as possible.

Installation of 1,770 of photovoltaic panels at the Sibiu site in Romania

As part of its zero-carbon objective, NTN Europe is continuing to modernise its industrial sites in order to reduce their energy consumption and increase the use of renewable energy.

The NTN-SNR Rulmenti site, located in Sibiu, Romania, has taken a further step in its energy transition with the installation of a solar farm comprising ground-mounted panels (85 per cent) and rooftop panels (15 per cent).

The aim is to generate a proportion of the site’s electricity locally and enhance its energy self-sufficiency through carbon-free energy.

A major investment in support of the green transition

With an investment of 500,000 euros, the Sibiu site has installed 1,450 photovoltaic panels in a ground-mounted solar farm covering an area of 7,000 m², as well as 320 panels on the site’s roof.

This installation will enable:
- The reduction of 662.55 tonnes of CO₂ emissions per year: equivalent to the annual consumption of 300 European households.
- The generation of 1,028 MWh/year (ground-mounted solar farm) + 113.80 MWh/year (roof-mounted panels)
- The site to utilise 100 per cent of the energy generated by the photovoltaic panels.

A project at the heart of NTN Europe’s energy objectives

The aim of the project is to achieve an installed capacity of 0.906 MW, or 906 kW, for the site’s own consumption. This capacity corresponds to an estimated annual generation of between 0.9 and 1.2 GWh, equivalent to the electricity consumption of approximately 180 to 250 households.

Beyond the group’s own objectives, this project is also in line with the guidelines of Romania’s 2021–2030 Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan, which aims to increase the share of renewable energy in final energy consumption.

Sibiu: a site powered 100 per cent by green energy

Thanks to this installation and the purchase of electricity sourced exclusively from renewable sources, the Sibiu site now operates on 100 per cent green electricity, generated from solar, wind, hydro or biomass energy.

By generating some of its own electricity, NTN Europe is directly reducing emissions linked to the consumption of purchased electricity (and contributing to Scope 2 of the Group’s plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035). This approach helps to reduce the carbon footprint of industrial activities and gradually meet Scope 2 targets.

A new stage in industrial transformation

This photovoltaic installation is a concrete example of the industrial transformation undertaken by NTN Europe. By investing in renewable energy generation solutions, the group is combining industrial performance with control over its energy consumption and a reduction in its environmental impact.

This achievement marks a further step towards the carbon neutrality target set by NTN Europe and demonstrates its commitment to embedding environmental considerations at the heart of its development in the long term.

“In Sibiu, the factory provides a concrete example of NTN Europe’s commitment to the environment through the installation of 1,770 photovoltaic panels. This project reflects a clear commitment to sustainably reducing the site’s carbon footprint, managing its energy consumption and prioritising local, carbon-free electricity generation. By combining self-consumption with a 100 per cent green electricity supply, the site reaffirms its commitment to the energy transition and to achieving the group’s carbon neutrality targets.”

Frederic BENSON, Finance and Procurement Director, NTN Europe Romania

European Disability Awareness Week at NTN: a week dedicated to inclusion

At NTN, inclusion is a daily commitment at the heart of our CSR strategy. During European Disability Employment Week (EDEW), which took place from 17th to 23rd November, NTN Europe reaffirmed its commitment to breaking down prejudices by offering workshops and awareness-raising activities.

A week to break down prejudices about disability

The national theme for the 2025 edition, ‘Disability and employment: equality for all’, resonates particularly strongly with NTN Europe (France). With 8.5% of our employees having a disability, we far exceed the legal threshold of 6%, which is concrete proof of our proactive inclusion policy.

Throughout the week, our teams (France) were able to participate in immersive and educational workshops to better understand the realities of disability:

  • Experience my vision: a sensory experience to understand visual impairments
  • Experience my disability: a simulation to feel the physical constraints of everyday life
  • Awareness-raising through mountain hiking chair testing: discovering adapted sports
  • And, of course, DuoDay, the highlight of the week, when we open our doors to interns with disabilities to discover the reality of the ordinary world.

DuoDay 2025: a day of encounters and sharing

This year, NTN had the pleasure of welcoming 14 people with disabilities to its production sites and head office. Fourteen pairs were formed with our employees, allowing them to immerse themselves in our professions and values in fields as varied as export customer accounting, PEX warehouse clerk, change manager, manufacturing agent, clutch assembly grinder, IT project manager/developer, machining operator, unloading reception operator, packaging agent, Delfin operator, HR assistant, specialised assembly worker, and grinding assembly operator.

It was a day of sharing, rich in exchanges, smiles and discoveries, which allowed people to meet, share their expertise and, above all, break down prejudices.

Verbatim from Emilie B., our disability advisor NTN Europe (France)

"Once again, NTN has rallied behind EDEW and DUODAY. Building on the experience of previous years, we are continuing our efforts to raise awareness and break down prejudices. Our goal is clear: to make disability a lever for social and organisational progress, in line with our values and our CSR policy. This new edition of EDEW focuses on equal opportunities and access to employment for all. Mental health, motor and visual disabilities, and disabled sports will be on the agenda this week.

Once again, DUODAY allowed us to open our doors to interns with disabilities to share our professions and working methods. This day is extremely rewarding for everyone: mobilising and uniting teams, giving meaning to one's work, sharing common values and having authentic exchanges are all benefits of DUODAY. This day acts as a lever for social cohesion and contributes to a better quality of life at work, while aligning employees with CSR objectives."

Verbatim from Jocelyn V., export customer accountant at NTN Europe, participating in DuoDay NTN Europe (France)

"I have been participating in DuoDay for several years now, and each time, each encounter is a moment when humanity takes precedence over everything else. I value sharing and friendliness. This Thursday with Valentin, we clicked right away and I would have liked to extend the day for another one. Valentin is curious, asks lots of questions and I even find myself no longer seeing his disability and considering him as a real colleague. We had a good laugh at lunchtime in the cafeteria, and in the evening we left together to catch our bus like two colleagues leaving work, with no difference between us, no disability!

I would like to thank NTN Europe and Emilie for making this wonderful encounter possible."

NTN Europe: a well-established disability policy

Beyond this awareness week, NTN Europe (France) has an ambitious and structured disability policy. In 2024, a new disability agreement was renegotiated, strengthening our commitment in two major areas:

  • The fight against all forms of discrimination
  • Integration and job retention

Thanks to a dedicated internal structure, we adapt workstations to meet the specific needs of our employees, focusing on prevention, ergonomics and personalised support.

Back to school: NTN supports three student projects that drive innovation and industrial progress

By supporting ambitious student projects every year, NTN passes on its expertise, stimulates tomorrow's innovation and helps train the talent that will shape the industry of the future. These partnerships illustrate a deep-rooted conviction for the group: the future of industry depends on exchanges between businesses and higher education.

This year, three flagship projects demonstrate this commitment: the Altaïr bicycle, the PITON programme and the Shell Eco-marathon.

The Altair project: an ultra-fast streamlined bicycle

NTN is proud to support the Altaïr bicycle project led by students from the Annecy University Institute of Technology. It pursues an extraordinary challenge: to design a human-powered streamlined bicycle capable of reaching unprecedented speeds. In 2023, with multiple world champion François Pervis, Altaïr 7 reached 139.89 km/h, setting a world university record and becoming the second fastest bicycle in history.

This year, the students are working to improve the bike's speed, with a clear goal: to break the absolute record of 144.17 km/h at the World Human Powered Speed Challenge 2025 next September in Nevada.

The Altaïr 7 bike is a concentrate of technology, aerodynamics and ingenuity. As a key sponsor, NTN Europe is contributing its expertise in precision mechanics, materials and reliability to help optimise the bike.

This project embodies performance, eco-design and team spirit – values that fuel NTN Europe's vision of the industry of the future.

Piton Project: combining engineering, marketing and digital technology

This year, NTN Europe joined the PITON programme, in partnership with the University of Savoie Mont Blanc. PITON (Parcours d'Innovation Transdisciplinaire Ouvert sur le Numérique) is a unique initiative in which students and companies work together to develop concrete solutions combining engineering, marketing and digital technology.

This year, a team of three students worked with NTN Europe on a strategic challenge: redesigning an electric micromotor for autonomous vehicles, while meeting performance and space constraints.

In six months, they designed a promising prototype that won the USMB Foundation Prize. A second prototype is currently in development.

This partnership perfectly illustrates how bringing together businesses and young talent can lead to innovative solutions for the mobility of tomorrow.

Shell Eco-marathon: designing the car of the future

NTN Europe also supports students from the INSA engineering school in Lyon in the Shell Eco-marathon challenge. This international competition brings together the engineers of tomorrow to tackle a challenge: designing an ultra-energy-efficient vehicle while maintaining comfort and ergonomics.

NTN provides technical support for the design by helping students develop a freewheel and supplying adaptation parts. The assembly went well and the tests were conclusive.

Their prototype will be presented at the NTN stand during the Mouvindustrie trade show, which will be held on 11 September at the 24 Hours of Le Mans circuit.

By contributing its technical expertise and testing facilities, NTN is supporting students in developing a responsible, forward-looking car concept. This project embodies our desire to actively contribute to more sustainable mobility by focusing on collaborative innovation.

"By supporting these student projects, NTN is helping to train future engineers. This contributes to the overall development of society and helps to train future employees. This approach also allows its R&D departement to stay connected to real technical challenges, while experimenting with new solutions in real-world conditions."
Vincent Pourroy-Solari
